The annual Emirates Airline Rugby Sevens Long Lunch saw a record number of rugby fans enjoy an afternoon of entertainment from Mils Muliaina and Scott Hastings.
Over 850 people turned up for the Long Lunch which is part of the excitement and build for the Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens taking pace on 5th – 7th December 2019 – celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
Muliaina took centre stage to talk about his career and experiences during his time with the New Zealand Rugby Team. From a young, determined 19-year-old making his debut in 1999, Muliaina reminisced about growing up in a locker room that had a different mindset and culture to what they experience now.
“Back in the day, I remember making my debut for the All Blacks [in 1999] as a 19-year-old and finishing my first game was incredible.”
Scott Hastings soon followed Muliaina and delivered a highly entertaining talk about the Dubai Rugby Sevens and their 50 year history. Hastings drew laughter from all corners of the room through his tales of the past but emphasised his time at the Dubai Sevens tournament over the years. He spoke about the transformation of the Dubai Sevens from an age-old event to one of the most prestigious tournaments in world rugby today.
“I love the Sevens, the game was invented in Scotland, Melrose 1883. I first came out here in 1988, playing in the old Dubai Exiles ground on the sand, we won the tournament [that year]. I’ve captained Scotland out here, I’ve managed teams and commentated [in Dubai]. What I love about it, is how the Sevens has been embraced here in the Middle East. To celebrate 50 years is incredible. The infrastructure and facilities is a testament to the region, to grow a sport from absolutely nothing just like Dubai to one of the worlds most iconic and tournaments.”
Taking place from Thursday, 5 December to Saturday, 7 December at The Sevens Stadium, This year’s Dubai Rugby Sevens is expected to be another thrilling weekend with free entry for all ages on Thursday and free entry all weekend for those under 12 with plenty to keep everyone entertained.
